For those of you that do not know...
Jun. 24th, 2007 12:13 amMy favorite characters always die. Doesn't matter if its a novel, a movie, a game, a comic or what. Favorite characters ALWAYS die.
Right now I'm trying to think of exceptions. Games like FFX where I simply don't like any characters don't count (though I guess Navara Guado is my favorite character, but if you think about it, pretty much all the guados are dead/dying in FFX-2, so he's probably dead as well). In the Sandman comics, whatshisface, that immortal human that doesn't die because he doesn't want to die, he... well, he obviously doesn't die. Other times they're just Too Fucking Cool to die (pretty much any Slayers character I like comes to mind). Sometimes, like the Marquis de Carabras from Neverwhere, my favorite characters come back to life, but that's not very common. Sometimes, like Tales of Symphonia's Yuan (I'm rather appreciatively neutral to Symphonia's characters, never understood the massive fangirling going on), my favorite characters simply disappear. Drop out of the story, never to be seen again. The author/story-dude just forgets about them or something.
I don't know when I realized that they always die. It's really my fault for liking, you know, the sort of characters that die. Not evil enough to be a villain, not good enough to be a hero, but quirky enough to get my attention. And then I know that they're on death row.
Seriously. Name a series/story/fandom/whatever I'm into/was into and chances are that my favorite characters die. Shit that I don't care about generally doesn't apply. Harry Potter f'instance. If I don't like any of the characters, then obviously none of my favorite characters die. (Bellatrix is gonna bite it though. Mark my words.)
It's gotten to the point where I can watch a movie and go "Nope, it's not over yet. DiCaprio's my favorite character. He's not dead yet."
