Mamma Mia

1) I typically wear heels when I go to Broadway (which is every other week, pretty much), nevermind the fact that it's fifteen blocks from Penn station to Broadway.  However, I haven't worn heels for 5-6 weeks now, what with Project Ex and Spring Break.  Unpleasant, to say the least.

2) Perhaps it was the severe foot pain thing, but I didn't like Mamma Mia.  It's supposed to be a comedy, but I can't say I found it funny.  I remember seeing The Producers, and that was funny.  Wicked and In The Heights had their own little lol moments as well.  Mamma Mia?  Um.  No.  Our usher danced during the finale, and that was hilarious (and awesome), but Mamma Mia certainly wasn't.

3) I'm not sure what the point behind Mamma Mia was.  As in, overarching story theme or purpose.  Was it just to be funny?  It didn't succeed at that.  Was it to promote twoo wuv?  Was it to promote individuality, etc?  Re: Wicked, In The Heights.  I found the plot itself not particularly engaging, but cute, and that's really good enough for Broadway.  It didn't leave a lasting impression on me, which was surprising since I've heard so much good stuff about the show.  Not enough to get really hyped, but enough to expect something decent.

4) ...I didn't like the music.  It's all inspired off of ABBA songs, so it's not even original music.  Of course, YMMV.  Dena liked it so much, she busted $30 on the CD.  Was generally unsatisfied by the acting too, but maybe it's just because the plot/dialogue was so cheesey.  I also wasn't impressed by the choreography (or lack of it) or the stage blocking (or the lack of it), so I'm of the opinion the directing was bad as well.  Again, YMMV depending on how active you like your stage to be--or if you don't care, then it really doesn't matter at all.

5) So if Sophie was born in the 1979, it ought to be 1999.  ...So, um, why is everyone dressed like they're in the 70's?  Genuine question.  I'm cool with it and dismiss it as artistic flavor, but I'm curious why they chose to do that.

6) The pre-show announcement was something like this.  "Audience members with nervous dispositions may need to exercise caution.  There will be platform shoes and white spandex in this show."  Made of win, that was.

Conclusion: Watch In The Heights.  ...Okay, real conclusion is that I have no clue why Mamma Mia is on Broadway.  Clearly some people totally loved it since it's been running since 1999.  I have no clue what it is that they loved though.
